For those who were rooting for Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth to be each other’s happily ever after, you likely got the shock of your life when the couple revealed they had split once again this weekend. And based on what has been out there over the last couple days, it’s official: young love is dead.

“Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” the statement to People confirmed. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”

Privacy. That’s a tricky word when it comes to celebs who either really do value whatever quiet they can get in their lives (ahem, Liam) and those who prefer to remain in the spotlight and climb mountains as a metaphor for change. Because while Hemsworth has always kept his private life private and is continuing to try and do so, Cyrus is decidedly not. Everyone grieves in their own way.

The “We Can’t Stop” singer has been snapped in bikini-clad pics with another woman going through her own break-up, Brody Jenner’s ex Kaitlynn Carter, which has stirred up a lot of feelings on social media.

Brody Jenner commented on Miley and Kaitlynn’s pic together with “Hot girl summer” and the fire emoji and followed that with a photo of his own, in which his pal Brandon Thomas Lee (yes, Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s son) chimed in with some snark, to which Miley responded. Brody was referencing now-viral snaps of Kaitlynn and Miley allegedly kissing on a boat, but neither of the women seem to be all that bothered by the media flurry surrounding them.

Whether or not the kiss means anything serious, it’s in keeping with Cyrus’ revelatory Elle interview in July, in which Cyrus—who identifies as queer—spoke frankly about her partnership with Hemsworth but added that she still is “very sexually attracted to women.”

After a quote from Daily Mail Australia became widely circulated that claimed Liam said “You don’t understand what it’s like,” the actor took to Instagram early Tuesday morning to publicly address the break-up and clarify that any other statements attributed to him were false.

Cyrus and Hemsworth dated on and off for 10 years before tying the knot at their Nashville home on December 23, 2018.
