Oh, the internet never lets you forget… and when it has receipts, well, it’s sure to bring them sooner or later. And if you’re royalty, there are some things you probably prefer remain buried in the archives – like posing with tabloids featuring your now-sister-in-law.

Fans of the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle couldn’t help but chuckle (or cringe, you choose) when a now-deleted photo emerged on Instagram showing her posing with a tabloid featuring Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton on its cover. And just to make matters even more awkward, it featured the splashy, and now evidently false, headline ‘Twins!’. The photo, which has surfaced on Twitter, is from circa 2014, with the headline possibly referencing the Duchess of Cambridge’s second pregnancy (Princess Charlotte, as far as we know, is definitely one of a kind).

Surprisingly, it’s not the first time Meghan’s pre-royal life has made reference to her future in-laws. On her now defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig (RIP), Markle posted about the female propensity to fixate on royalty. “Little girls dream of being princesses…,” she said, adding that “Grown women seem to retain this childhood fantasy.” She went on to name Kate directly, commenting on the hype around what was to be only the second most buzzed-about wedding in recent times, saying “Just look at the pomp and circumstance surrounding the royal wedding and endless conversation about Princess Kate.” Oh, little did she know…

At the time, Meghan, who was then living and working in Toronto as an actress and lifestyle influencer, was worlds away from the British monarchy. Who on earth would have guessed that merely two years later, she’d be dating Prince Harry of England, engaged by the following year, and then in 2018 would find herself front and centre of one of the most highly-anticipated royal celebrations? Not us. But she’s since become one of the most recognisable and popular royals. In fact, these days she’s more likely to find her own image on the front cover of a trashy tabloid than her sister-in-law’s, such has her royal persona eclipsed the rest of the clan.

The Royals have a notoriously antagonistic relationship with the media, dating all the way back to the days of Princess Diana. Before Meghan was officially part of The Firm, Prince Harry took the unprecedented step of releasing a personal, and direct statement asking the press to respect the safety and privacy of his then-girlfriend. And in the time since, the media has wasted no time playing up rumours of a Meghan and Kate feud. So, if Kate does see this, we hope she’ll forgive her fellow Duchess – she really had no idea. But we’re guessing it’s all water under the bridge by now.
