Wednesday night’s episode of Riverdale was a tough one for fans of the show to watch, and not because of the continuing bonkers storylines (which are why we love it). This week’s “Chapter 54: Fear the Reaper” (maybe the title should have been changed?) marked the final appearance by the late Luke Perry, who passed away suddenly on March 4 after suffering a massive stroke only a few days earlier. He was 52.
Perry spent his three seasons on Riverdale playing Archie’s dad Fred Andrews, a character that was grounded in kindness, generosity, and compassion, all characteristics that Perry was known for in his real life. Wednesday’s episode only featured Perry on screen for a few moments, but the actor’s final scene was a loving moment between father and son and acted as a fitting reminder of why fans loved the character of Fred Andrews.

Perry’s death was not addressed on this week’s episode and with only three episodes left this season, there’s a good chance his character won’t be written out of the show until next year. In March, Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told ET “You know, honestly, we are I think all still in shock and are all still processing and grieving. We know that we have to address it in some way, but we’re giving ourselves a little bit of time and space before we figure out the best way to honour him.”
Following Perry’s death, fans around the world began sharing their favourite memories of Perry, while his many cast-mates, including his Beverly Hills 90210 co-stars and Riverdale family, posted their own tributes, with the remaining episodes of this season of Riverdale dedicated to Perry. Now that Riverdale has aired Perry’s final scene, fans are once again remembering the beloved actor.

The Riverdale cast, including actors Asha Brom, Marisol Nichols, Ashleigh Murray and Aguirre-Sacasa, also honoured Perry on social media.

This video is touching because it reminds me of Luke. How much he believed in me, my voice, talent. More than I did most days. Luke loved seeing me on stage and I can think of a moment we shared from each song.

This week’s #Riverdale is the last episode Luke filmed. As always, Fred’s imparting words of wisdom to Archie. A beautiful, true moment between a father and his son. Wish these scenes could go on forever…❤️🏆💎👨🏻💻 pic.twitter.com/meokbvo0Wt

As tough as Wednesday’s episode was to watch, it might be even more emotional when Perry’s Fred is finally written off the show. We’re not ready.
