It’s hard to believe that after all of the accolades, the buzz, the EMMY AWARDS, that one of the best Canadian shows in history, Orphan Black (Saturdays, 10 p.m. ET on Space) , is coming to an end. The fifth and final season kicked off this weekend and we’re already on pins and needles wondering what’s to come for our favourite sestras.
While we know that the action picked up pretty much where we left off — with Sarah injured and alone in the woods while Cosima and Delphine reunite and Alison and Donnie search for Helena — the rest of the season’s storylines are pretty top-secret.
Still, that can’t stop us from looking back at some of our favourite clones over the years. Here are our top picks, as portrayed by the always flawless Tatiana Maslany.
9. Tony Sawicki
Okay so we loved the idea of Tony and having a transgendered clone. Because as these sestras have proven, no two clones are created equal. (Or something like that.) Sadly, Tony only ever appeared that one time in the second season, and it was kind of confusing. Mostly because Tony and Felix made out, but also because Tony’s look just didn’t seem right. Maybe it was the bad facial hair or perhaps it was the over-sexualized tone of the scene, but his appearance felt off. That said, we’d love a redo!
To be fair we’d have some trust issues too if we knew how much damage technology could do, so M.K.’s shady disposition and animal masks can be forgiven. Still, we’re sad that she couldn’t save Beth, and that the other clones didn’t get a chance to interact with her earlier on. Her character could have been fleshed out so much more.
7. Beth Childs
Having a Beth-centric flashback episode was one of our favourite instalments of the show to-date. The only problem? We wanted more. Sadly that’s not likely to happen, considering Beth stepped in front of a train in the pilot of this show, and her life ended before we really got to know her. Still, she appears to Sarah every once in a while in those dream sequences, which, in our opinion is better than nothing.
6. Rachel Duncan
This clone is so despicably evil we wanted to put her even higher up on the list. Unfortunately we couldn’t, because Maslany just plays her too darned well. At the end of the day we all need our bad guys to keep the storyline going, so that’s why Rachel gets to sit a little closer to the middle of the pack.
5. Krystal Goderitch
It is impossible not to love this bubbly, air-headed clone. And it’s not just because she’s smarter than she lets on. It’s because when she knows something isn’t right she isn’t afraid to investigate and follow her gut… even if it leads her to some pretty gnarly places. Plus we’re sure we could all benefit from some of her makeup tips. (How does Krystal not do online tutorials yet?)
4. Sarah Manning
The leader of the sestras is headstrong, stubborn and completely wild. And yes, we love her for all of that and more. While we have some issues with how she’s abandoned her daughter in the past (not to mention the way she has treated her adoptive mum), Sarah has proved time and time again that she’s there for her family. And in the end isn’t that what really counts?
3. Alison Hendrix
It’s impossible not to love this uptight clone, her arts and crafts, her penchant for community theatre or her super secretive dark side. We especially love Alison when she’s paired in scenes with hubby Donnie, because as these two have proven on multiple occasions when they put their heads together they can really make it rain.
All this clone has ever wanted was for somebody to love her. She’s actually really sweet, despite her murder-y inclinations, and love of mustard-smeared sardines. She’d do anything for her sestras and has been a fan favourite from the start. And really how could she not be, after that first season scene in which she cut off a man’s tail and then used it like a glow-stick in the club?
1. Cosima Neihouse
Oh Cosima, how we love you. Between this character’s wicked smarts, awesome ability to connect with people and love of geeking out over a good board game and some weed, there’s everything to love about her. Since the beginning of the show we’ve worried that her time is limited, given her ongoing illness, but we really, truly hope this is one character that makes it to the very end.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t at least mention the three unknown clones, Aryanna Giordano, Janika Zingler and Danielle Fournier. Sadly, all we’ve seen of these ladies is their pictures. As for Jennifer Fitzsimmons and Katja Obinger? Well we only ever met Jennifer through that video she made before her untimely death. And Katja was sniped out before we got to know her. RIP ladies.
