A new wave of feminism has taken over pop culture in the past few years, extending the discussion of female empowerment from University classrooms to the music charts. What started with the Spice Girls proclaiming ‘girl power’ in the 1990’s has had a resurrection, thanks to Beyoncé instructing her millions of fans on who run the world (girls). Artists like Taylor Swift and Katy Perry have begun following suit and embracing the ‘F’ word, leading to young girls and boys identifying as feminists.

Retailers are beginning to take note, with kids clothing maker The Children’s Place acting as the latest store to embrace the girl power movement.

The store has recently launched a #GirlPowerShop section of their website, with numerous shirts proclaiming that girls can change the world and displaying messages of female empowerment.

Designs are varied, with one shirt featuring female emoji characters showing women taking on jobs that are traditionally male-dominated, including a police officer, construction worker, firefighter and scientist.

The new line of shirts offer a much needed alternative to the typical offering for young girls, which historically have centered on messages of beauty and fairy tales.
