Ten years ago, a little movie by the name of Mamma Mia! hit theatres and blew us all away with its ridiculously expansive cast of A-listers. Seriously. They had Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters and of course the legendary, the iconic, Dame* Meryl Streep (*unofficial). It was a fun romp around a scenic Greek island where Streep and a cast of zany characters danced around to ABBA for 108 minutes of lighthearted bliss. Pure guilty pleasure.

Now, the powers that be have decided that 10 years later, the public needs another one. ABBA’s got more songs and Greece still exists, so why not, right? Plus, pretty much anyone who appreciates pop culture would go see Meryl Streep in any role. Except they kept things pretty vague about if she was even in the movie at all.

The first trailer for the film pretty heavily implied that Meryl Streep’s character, Donna Sheridan, died in the 10 years since the first film. Seyfried, as Donna’s daughter Sophie, tells her (late?) mother’s best friends that she can’t “do it alone” referring to her pregnancy. What follows seems to be the story of how Young Donna met all three of Sophie’s potential fathers and ended up living in Greece. Throughout the trailer, we only see old Mamma Mia footage of Streep and Lily James in the role of Young Donna. Not a good start for anyone who just wanted to watch Meryl run around in coveralls singing “Dancing Queen” on repeat.

Now after months of agony, uncertainty and speculation, we may have our answer, although it may be a less-than-satisfying one. The good news is that Streep attended the Mamma Mia! 2: Here We Go Again “blue” carpet premiere alongside the rest of the cast, Cher in particular (who plays Donna’s mother in the new film, despite the fact she’s only three years older than Streep).

A brief aside: Cher and Streep kissed on the carpet and fans are here. for. it.

Can we take Streep’s appearance to mean she’s in the movie? Maybe. Our primary concern at the moment is that she’s “in the movie” but it’s all flashbacks from the first MM. We need NEW Streep content, Universal!

Thankfully, by some miracle (our guess is the internet), the producers heard our pleas and answered them with a behind the scenes look at Meryl Streep filming two new scenes for the movie. She’s present, she’s singing and we’re feeling a whole lot better.

So to recap: Meryl Streep is in the movie. She sings. She hangs out with Cher. BUT she’s also only featured on two songs and possibly only in two scenes judging by the video evidence. It’s also highly likely that her character is dead and these are just flashbacks and/or brief appearances from beyond the grave.

Guess we’re just going to have to see how it all goes down. Well played, Universal, well played.
