You know what gift nobody will be expecting to find under their tree this holiday season?
The answer is Margaret Sutherland’s infamous painting of Stephen Harper sans clothing. Yet it has popped up for sale on Kijiji with an asking price of $8,800. The painting, titled Emperor Haute Couture was originally unveiled to much controversy in 2012. In fact, someone even filed a sexual harassment claim on the former prime minister’s behalf over it.
But while everyone was busy getting offended, someone quietly purchased the painting for $5,000. Recently, the mystery-buyer came forward in an interview with the Edmonton Journal, explaining that she never wanted to reveal herself because she actually worked for the federal government at the time of the sale. Now that Danielle Potvin is retired and in need of some cash to fund recent renovations to her home, however, she’s re-listed the painting for sale with room to make a healthy profit.
Did we mention nude Stephen Harper is also being served a nice warm cup of Tim Hortons coffee?
This is not just a painting, friends, it’s a piece of Canadian history.
“This is political art,” Potvin told the Edmonton Journal. “You could write a Masters thesis probably on this. There’s much more than just what you see.”
Yeah, we bet there is.
