We've said it before and we'll say it again—fall is the best time for fashion! The jackets, the boots, the layers...it's all just so good, right? Well, fall fashion just got a whole lot better because, apparently, this will be one of the strongest fall fashion seasons we've seen in years—and it's also the most wearable. Two of the biggest trends we'll see are "extreme comfort" and "extreme dressing up", and there's something in store for everyone and every taste. Win-win!The Kit’s editor-in-chief Laura deCarufel breaks down some of the biggest trends of the season and how to nail the look.

Utility

The utility trend is all about comfort. The boiler suit or jumpsuit from Massimo Dutti is the key item here and that’s what you build your outfit around. To make the jumpsuit fresh for fall, look for a piece that gives you a little shape like one with a belt, or you can add your own. You also want a cropped hem, which looks modern and is a great way to show off your amazing fall boots! As you transition into winter, try layering a turtleneck underneath in a similar colour palette which looks very sophisticated. Complete the look with a trench coat, like this one from Club Monaco. To keep the look feeling relaxed, wear it open and belt it at the back.

The new ladylike

This is your first major dress-up option and we’re calling it the “new ladylike”. This is a great fall workwear outfit: Separately, the pieces have a retro vibe, but when you pair them together, it works. First, you have the menswear-inspired blazer in plaid like this one from RW&CO. – a trend we saw all over the runways, from Burberry to Celine. Next, you add in the classic pussybow blouse. A midi pleated skirt, like this one from Wilfred completes the look. Look for ways to add unexpectedness, like light makeup and slightly undone hair tied with a bow, which is a big trend for fall. But basically, if you look like you stepped out of a boardroom in 1977, you’re pulling it off!

High-fashion fleece

Lately, the puffer has been the coat of the style set, but this fall, the fleece gets the high-fashion treatment. This fleece coat from J.Crew is gorgeous in a soft purple, which is overtaking soft pink this season, and it’s also a fresh update on last year’s teddy bear trend. The best way to wear it? Treat it like it’s a more comfortable blazer. Wear it with a textured turtleneck in the same colour palette and pair with denim. Finish off the look with boots worn over your denim; it’s been awhile since we saw this look, but it’s officially back. The key to trying the trend this fall is to choose a high boot – you want it to graze, even touch the knee, creating a super flattering silhouette.

Modern gothic

The modern gothic trend is the opposite of relaxed, cozy chic. It’s theatrical, over-the top and super glamorous, but it’s also surprisingly wearable. Like the utility trend and the jumpsuit, start with a statement piece. This sheer dress with floral details from Zara does the trick. You could wear it on its own and it would create an elegant, moody vibe. To push it further, layer a long sleeve lace turtleneck underneath and then add a moto jacket on top – the mix of pretty and edgy really works. Remember, we all need a cropped moto this fall – it’s a staple!
