Break ups are rarely easy and when large estates and huge sums of money are involved, they can get downright nasty. Unfortunately, that’s the case for Frances Bean Cobain, the only daughter of musician and actor Courtney Love and Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain. Separating from her husband Isaiah Silva after two years of marriage, the divorce proceedings were settled on Monday and left Frances bereft of something precious to her.
Silva and Cobain were married in 2014 with Cobain filing for divorce in March, 2016. The pair have been embroiled in a lengthy divorce settlement for the past two years, with Cobain arguing that she should retain all the money from her father’s estate that she entered the marriage with, an amount that is valued at $450 million. The judge ruled that Cobain will not have to pay Silva spousal support, but she will have to give up her father’s famous guitar.
The 1959 Martin D-18E–which Silva says Cobain gave to him as a wedding present–is the same guitar Kurt Cobain played in Nirvana’s famous MTV Unplugged session. Cobain has denied doing so, with the guitar as the main issue extending the divorce proceedings. In addition to its high sentimental value for Cobain, the guitar is said to be worth millions. So, our guess is that Silva’s either keeping the guitar to emotionally hurt his ex-wife or to sell a piece of her family history for millions. Either way, it’s pretty crappy. Maybe he’s a big Nirvana fan, but this is a terrible way to honour the band. Really Silva, her dad’s guitar? That’s way harsh.
Not cool dude, not cool.
