Twelve orcas versus one seal: if you had place a bet on who’d come out on top, you’d probably put your money on the killer whales, right? Luckily for us — and the seal — the orcas lost big time.

Just off British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, said lonely seal was surrounded by a dozen seemingly hungry orcas moving in for the kill. But, in a stroke of luck, just as the whales were moving in, a small boat zoomed past. The tiny water vessel that was being towed turned in a literal lifeboat as the quick-thinking seal hopped on and coasted to safety.

Captured on camera by a local, the seal was spotted chilling on the boat for 15 minutes before returning to the water after his 12 enemies disappeared.
