Parenting can be tough. Scratch that. Parenting IS tough. And whether it’s the early stages of diapers and sleepless nights, the toddler phase where they’re getting into things they shouldn’t be getting into, a little older and they’re asking you about everything or older and they’re not asking or talking to you about anything, it’s the kind of thing you have to experience because every kid is different. And every kid needs to be handled a different way.
Now, imagine being 56 and welcoming twins for the first time. Welcome to George Clooney‘s life. The Oscar winner and A-list superstar and his wife, beautiful barrister Amal (sorry, attorney and lawyer doesn’t have the same ring to it, nor does it seem to do her justice), welcomed their children Alex and Ella in June. They haven’t gone public with them but that doesn’t mean George and Amal are hiding them away. On the contrary, he’s more than happy to have you check out photos of his babies on his phone.
“Get a load of this!” he gushed to the Daily Mail‘s Gabrielle Donnelly, a.k.a. the luckiest reporter ever, as he thrust his phone into her face. “You can tell the boy from the girl, right?”
He added: “He’s twice the size she is. He’s a moose and she’s just this little, tiny, beautiful thing. He went on to to say Alex “eats and eats and sits and goes ‘uh-uh'” and George has never “seen anything eat so much in my life.” As for Ella, “she’s very delicate and feminine, and she’s all eyes and looks like her mother.”
Oh, the sounds of a proud new daddy. There’s nothing like it, especially when the daddy is Clooney, who many of us thought wouldn’t be a father, much less a husband. But he’s blossomed in both roles.
“The surprise for me was how much more complicated twins is than just the one — it’s not just twice as much work, it’s more than that,” he said. “And it’s not even so much work for me, because these two knuckleheads don’t even care that I exist right now! All they want to do is eat, so I have nothing to give them except a bottle once in a while and they’re happy about that, but it’s mostly Amal for them at the moment. I don’t even really understand what’s going on.”
Of his wife, Clooney said the words new (and established) mamas want to hear: “I have such admiration for my wife because she’s breastfeeding them and getting about two hours of sleep per interval, and the love they have for her is a sight to see and it’s beautiful.”
As for how different he thought his life would turn out, he shrugged off what might’ve been. “I met Amal and I thought, ‘Well, I have this incredible relationship, this is wonderful.’ And then… all of a sudden we have these two knuckleheads around who make me laugh every day.”
Clooney recently told eTalk‘s Ben Mulroney how “crazy” life has become but admitted how lucky he is. “They’re such good kids and it’s really fun. But it is funny how quickly your life changes.”
George also had to brag about one thing: “I am a master diaper changer,” he told Mulroney and his Suburbicon star, Julianne Moore.
In spite of all the dirty diapers and the interrupted sleeps, he couldn’t miss them more. “Look, today is the first time since they’ve been born that I’ve been away from them, and my wife’s sending me pictures and I’m sitting here thinking, ‘God, I wish I was with my kids’ — and that’s fun.”
Man, he’s going to be a fun dad to watch. And what we wouldn’t give to see George’s phone. You think he’s set up albums of pics and videos of the babies? Making collages and slideshows yet? Pfft, not yet. That’s going to be all Amal.
