Well it’s official. Grey’s Anatomy fans everywhere should be jumping up and down right about now, because not only is the show coming back for another season this fall, it’s also bringing a spin-off with it.

Dr. Addison Montgomery, eat your heart out.

Let’s be clear though: this spin-off is no Private Practice. Unlike that medical drama (which we totally loved and miss), this new spin-off actually won’t have anything to do with doctors at all. Because this new show is all about firefighters.

Okay, so excuse us. Chicago Fire, eat your heart out.

The news was officially confirmed on Tuesday when ABC held its annual upfront presentation (a gala for advertisers in which networks unveil their upcoming programming) in New York. Right now the spinoff is untitled and has no cast, but the network has picked it up straight to series, which means this show is officially happening no matter what.

We do know that this show is set in a Seattle firehouse, that Shonda Rhimes will executive produce, and that the stories will revolve around vets and rookies alike. From the sounds of things, there could be epic crossover episodes between Grey’s and the new show, kind of like the way the Chicago series (Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med) have them now.

That means heading into Thursday’s season finale of Grey’s Anatomy, you can bet we’re going to keep our eyes peeled for any potential cast members. As you’ll recall from last week’s cliffhanger ending of an episode, Stephanie was locked in a corridor with the deranged rapist patient who wanted to start a fire so the doors would release and he could escape. Stephanie tried to be heroic and set him on fire instead, but the plan went haywire when the man got too close to an oxygen tank and there was a massive explosion.

Yeah, so we’ve been on pins and needles.

Let’s just hope that all of our favourite characters will be okay, and live to see the spinoff come to fruition, shall we?

The Grey’s Anatomy finale airs Thursday at 7 p.m. ET on CTV.
