Manicures, from solid hues to unique graphic designs, will forever be a quick and dirty way to extend personality. They’re an inexpensive way to embrace a trend, and easy to switch up. #Commitmentphobes, rejoice! But if you’re tired of turning to that Coca-Cola red polish week after week, this new trend in nail art might just be the refresh you’ve been waiting for.

Negative space manicures are a gorgeous and simple way to make a statement with the tips of your fingers this season. It works like this: Instead of coating your entire tip with a brush of colour, negative space designs essentially accent your nails with simple shapes and patterns, leaving part of your natural nail exposed.

We saw ’em on the spring runways at Proenza Schouler, Vera Wang, Rodarte and Opening Ceremony, so it’s no surprise the trend is trickling into real life. And with neutrals like cream, camel, taupe, grey and beige stealing the sartorial spotlight this season, these easy-to-wear hues perfectly complement the negative space manicure.

Here are some of the most stunning designs to spark inspiration. Bring these photos along to your next nail appointment or try your hand at a DIY mani at home.
