It’s no surprise that the fashion industry is cutthroat, but when it comes to beauty standards, sometimes, their concerns are just absurd.

Apparently when Gigi Hadid first met Tommy Hilfiger, prior to his February 2015 NYFW show, the casting director thought she didn’t quite fit in with the other girls. “Our casting director said, ‘She doesn’t really fit because you know she’s not quite as tall as the other girls, she’s not quite as thin. So they put a red, white and blue poncho on her. It covered a lot of her body, unfortunately, but it received millions of hits,” Hilfiger told Yahoo Style’s Joe Zee.

Although Tommy insists he was not happy with the decision to put Gigi in the poncho, the fact that a casting director of a major fashion label thought that Gigi (who is 5’10” by the way) was too short and not thin enough for her body to be on display speaks magnitudes.

We think that all bodies should be celebrated, Gigi’s included. There shouldn’t be one “perfect” standard we all need to abide by—all bodies are beautiful. An ideal body type may be totally subjective, but we can all agree that if Gigi Hadid is considered “fat” in the fashion world, then it’s one we’d rather not live in, thank you very much.
