Attention party people (and those who have black lights and psychedelic posters at home, you know who you are), there’s a hair trend going on right now that’s going to remind you of days gone by. It’s called glow-in-the-dark hair, and even if you don’t apply the trend to your own head, you won’t be able to look away from these brilliant styles.

Take a look at this super-cool gal with glowing rainbow hair, for example:

Or how about this? It’s definitely an artform to get it just right.

While UV-glowing hair colour has been around for a while, a Star Wars-themed contest on Instagram jumpstarted the vivid hair trend. Insta users entered the contest with hairstyles inspired by Padmé Amidala, Yoda, and of course, light sabres (accompanied by the hashtag #starwarspoplocks, if you want to check out the entries).

Here’s one of them:

Not into Star Wars? That’s cool, it’s a fun idea to do with your kids regardless! They’ll think you’re the coolest:

Intrigued? Want to get luminous hair yourself? If you want UV-activated hair for just special occasions, you can try Manic Panic Dye Hard Temporary Hair Color Styling Gel or Stargazer Neon Hair Gel UV. For a longer-lasting solution, first lighten your hair as white as you can get it, then colour it with a semi-permanent product like Chromasilk Neons, in yellow and green, available at select salons (use the salon locator), Stargazer UV Semi-Permanent Hair Dye or select colours from Manic Panic’s High Voltage collection. (You can see all their glowing hair and makeup products here.)

It’s pretty good stuff, too. Here’s a girl who has hair that looks like those stars you put on kids’ ceilings:

And here’s a glow-in-the-dark braid:

Just remember that while these products are labelled “semi-permanent” or even “temporary”, very blonde or pale hair can be stained, so if rainbow locks aren’t appropriate for that big work conference coming up, maybe test the product on a hidden section of hair first! Otherwise, go ahead and have some fun! It’s like an acid trip for your hair, but without the, y’know, acid.
