This season of Grey’s Anatomy has featured no shortage of high-stakes storylines for its doctors. Alex almost ended up in jail, Meredith, Riggs and Maggie are in a sorta-love triangle, a new doctor arrived to shake things up (thanks Minnick), and battle lines between physicians and bosses have been drawn. Plus, there’s been a few hot hook ups and painful break ups, two things Grey’s Anatomy always has at the ready.
Grey’s Anatomy is performing at its best when it seamlessly weaves main character development with interesting medical cases, and this week gave us exactly that.
There was the 16 year-old waiting for a new kidney from his ecstatic mother who was far too loving and supportive of her son for her storyline to go well. A bum kidney laid the groundwork for her estranged abusive husband to save the day, thus giving viewers a new piece of medical trivia and a development in Jo’s past with her own abusive husband. Gold star, Grey’s Anatomy.
Next, we got the trifecta of Grey’s perfection. First, an emotional moment of great insight from the usually guarded Riggs. Character development. Next, a surprising medical case that shone a light on the effects of mental disease not only on the person it affects but those around them, highlighting why more knowledge on signs of illness and resources for treatment are important. Medical knowledge that made us cry. Thirdly, a guest appearance that lets you pat yourself on the back for being such a loyal TV viewer. Hello, Anna from The OC.
Did much happen this week to move the season along? Sure. Alex is back at work, Meredith will soon be returning to work, and Arizona and Minnick totes kissed at work. The best part was that none of these progressions hit us over the head. Instead, they happened organically alongside interesting medical cases. Classic Grey’s Anatomy.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV.
