After last week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, we didn’t think we had any tears left to shed for the Season 14 finale. Thankfully, Grey’s knew that viewers were emotionally exhausted after spending an hour thinking that April Kepner was being written off the show via untimely death, so this week they gave us joyful tears instead. Still exhausted, but relieved to see so many happy endings.
We knew going into the finale that Jo and Alex were finally going to get to say ‘I do,’ but since no wedding has ever gone as planned on Grey’s Anatomy, there had to be a few hiccups and a couple of life or death situations to keep things spicy. After all these seasons, the Post-it wedding between Meredith and Derek really seems like the safe way to go. At least Jo got to keep her eyebrows.
First, there was confusion over where Jo and Alex’s wedding was taking place, with April accidentally copying out the wrong GPS link and sending all the guests to another wedding venue. It did seem odd that none of the doctors thought it was strange that Jo and Alex were getting married in a church, but maybe they chalked it up to April’s influence on their big day.
The mistake turned out to be lucky, with the mother of the bride (not Jo) collapsing at the altar.
Miranda rushed the woman to the hospital, where she ran into Teddy Altman, who was in town to ask for a job. After scrubbing in with Miranda, Teddy was offered the temporary position of Chief of Surgery, freeing up Miranda to listen to TED Talks and collect giant cheques for her butt gadget. Let’s hope the new position as Chief isn’t too stressful for Teddy since OMG she’s pregnant. It did seem weird to fly around the world to ask for a job when she could have just emailed Miranda…so, it’s Owen’s baby, right? That’s what we’re all assuming? Owen, who is currently fostering a baby and falling back in love with Amelia, is the father of Teddy’s baby? Fingers crossed Teddy has always wanted to be a mom, because this woman continues to have the worst luck with love.
As for the correct wedding, the word ‘catastrophe’ was used more than ‘congratulations.’ Jo and Alex ended up locking themselves in a shed with a dead body, so they could have sex before the wedding, an act that would have been just as fun if they simply used the bathroom in one of their suites. Their disappearance gave all the guests time to get drunk, with Andrew kissing Meredith, Andrew giving the quintessential drunk wedding speech, and the wedding planner going into anaphylactic shock after accidentally eating a shrimp. The only thing that confused us about the caricature wedding planner was that there needed to be one. If anyone can plan a wedding on her own, it’s April. She’s never had problem with the planning, just the follow through.
If there was any hope of the wedding being saved, it was dashed with Intern Schmidt knocking over the wedding cake as he was fainting at the sight of the wedding planner’s blood. How is this guy going to be a surgeon?
Eventually, Jo and Alex do get married, but instead of the outdoor event planned by April, it’s on a ferry and officiated by Meredith. And yeah, it was still beautiful. Tears, tears, and tears.
As for April, her wedding didn’t go to waste either. It’s been a few weeks since Grey’s tried to kill us by almost killing April and she decided to leave the hospital to do God’s work, which in her case means giving free medical care of the homeless. Yeah, that’s pretty God-like. She and Matthew are better than ever and after Matthew managed to not punch Jackson (which he really had coming), the Christian paramedic decided to not waste a beautiful backdrop.
Matthew proposed to April and she accepted, with the late wedding officiant arriving just in time to marry the two for real this time.
In a fitting goodbye to both characters, April is walked down the aisle by her best friend Arizona, who revealed in the finale episode that not only is Callie now single (buh bye Penny), Arizona gets excited every time she hears from her ex-wife. Looks like the move to New York is coming at a great time.
So, April and Arizona got their happy endings and we got cliffhangers-lite with Teddy’s baby reveal and Jo and Alex possibly moving to Boston for a fellowship. Grey’s, you never stop surprising us.
