It’s been a long time coming, but after 15 seasons it looks like we’re finally going to see a Grey’s Anatomy (Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV) character go to jail. Unfortunately, it’s for something that no one should be arrested for doing. After Meredith used her daughter’s name to forge insurance papers for a young girl whose family had been detained at the border, DeLuca made the ultimate sacrifice and took the fall. He really does love her. And now he’s going to jail for it.
Meredith’s split-second decision last week ensured that little Gabby received the surgery she needed to live, but the consequences were still dire. As Weber pointed out, Meredith has now put herself at risk for losing her license and going to jail, leaving her children without a mother. She is not a girl scout. DeLuca was so inspired by Meredith’s insurance fraud that he proclaimed his love for her, a sentiment that wasn’t reciprocated by Meredith because the last man that loved her is now dead. I don’t think those two things are connected, but I get her resistance.
After spending the entire episode in the boardroom in a secret meeting, Bailey and Catherine finally called DeLuca in to question him about his involvement in the surgery. Because he’s a fool in love, DeLuca took the fall for Meredith, saying that he wrote down Ellis’ name and didn’t tell Meredith. This guy gets hotter by the minute.
In an impressive show of foresight, the Grey’s writers played the long game with this episode. DeLuca is given the chance by Catherine to say goodbye to Meredith and ‘admit’ his insurance fraud, but Meredith can’t stop him because she’s sealed in the Hyperbaric Chamber (that was purchased at the beginning of the season) while Alex treats a child (who has been a patient for the last set of episodes). Meredith is in the chamber to tell Alex about Jo’s mother (who we met last month). Well played, Grey’s Anatomy.
With next week’s Grey’s Anatomy also the season finale, we likely won’t find out whether DeLuca will lose his license and be sent to jail, but if he is, he’ll be the first and least deserving in a long line of characters that probably should have lost their scrubs. Izzy cut the LVAD wire. Alex almost beat DeLuca to death. Most recently, Jo showed up to work drunk…at a hospital…where she’s a doctor. So yeah, DeLuca and Meredith forged some papers so a little girl who had been put in a camp-jail at the border could get surgery to fix her cancer. If anyone is waiting for us to chant ‘Lock him up,’ it’s not going to happen.
As an aside, if Meredith and Alex are in the chamber and DeLuca is being escorted off the premises…who’s watching Jo? She’s gonna run. She’s definitely gonna run.
At least she’ll disappear with Meredith and Alex finally knowing the truth about her past, which was revealed because, ‘if anyone can help, it’s Meredith.’ Really? Not a psychiatrist? Or a trauma doctor? Or a social worker? Sure, we’ll go with Meredith.
Speaking of insurance, a topic that has come up many times on Grey’s Anatomy because the US is a mess, remember when Teddy married Henry so he could use her insurance and they fell in love? Admittedly, it started out as an unhealthy marriage (literally), but it turned into true love. That’s what we want for Teddy. That’s what Tom wants to give her. Smart, funny, loving Tom who has been Teddy’s ride or die throughout her pregnancy. But the heart wants what the heart wants, and the heart is stupid, so Teddy and her millions of hormones have decided to end things with Tom and be with Owen, the guy who has made a habit out of breaking her heart. Last week we watched Owen tell his therapist that he’s in love with ‘her.’ What are the odds the ‘her’ is Teddy and not Amelia? Do we even care at this point? It’s the same people making terrible decisions over and over again. Link and Tom deserve better. Teddy’s unborn baby and her Ikea change table deserve better.
And don’t get us started on Jackson and Maggie’s camping trip. It’s beginning to feel as though the writers have given up on the storyline with these two. From Maggie camping in a lace bra (really?) to travelling to the middle of nowhere and going off the grid when her co-worker Teddy is nine months pregnant (really?) to Jackson not checking for rain or fog in Seattle (really?) to Maggie being so into books that she’s never been outside long enough to be stung by a mosquito (REALLY?) we’re about ready to pull the plug on Jaggie. Really.
Watch the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy on Wednesday, May 15 at 8 p.m. ET on CTV.
