Grey’s Anatomy might have just wrapped its 11th season, but most of us Patrick Dempsey fans out there are still reeling over the fact that the original McDreamy, a.k.a. Dr. Derek Shepherd, is no longer with the show. That’s because he was killed off in an episode leading up to the finale, one that pretty much ripped our hearts out.
Dr. Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) and the rest of the Grey Sloan Memorial staff might be moving on next season thanks to a big time jump (the episode following McDreamy’s death fast forwarded quite a few months), but we’re still on shaky ground.
This news, however, is either going to help give us some much needed closure, or rip the wound open even more. According to E! Online, Grey’s Anatomy has cast a new male lead to join the cast when it returns for Season 12, and all signs point to the fact the he could be the next McDreamy.
Martin Henderson is no stranger to show creator Shonda Rhimes and her many, many projects. He was, after all, the lead in Off the Map, another ABC medical drama that aired several seasons ago. Of course we know very little about what Henderson is going to do on Grey’s (the show hasn’t even begun production just yet), but we do know for sure that he’ll be playing a surgeon.
Could he be the competing doctor that’s going after the Chief position when the show returns? That would certainly put all our dreams of Katherine Heigl returning to the series on hold. Or maybe he’s just another newbie doctor that’s been hired to roam the on-call rooms of our dreams.
We mean, there are definite similarities between Dempsey and Henderson that can’t be ignored. The luscious brown locks… the pretty blue eyes. Heck, they both even have really kind faces if you look at them side-by-side. Not that we’ve been ahem staring, or anything…
Now all that’s left is to find him a proper McNickname.
Grey’s Anatomy returns this fall to CTV.
