If you’re a Grey’s Anatomy newbie this season, this week’s episode had a number of callbacks that you may have missed. If you’re an OG like Alex, Meredith and Bailey, then this week was all about hidden and not so hidden Easter Eggs.

The episode opened with Alex, who is now working in the clinic, and thankfully growing less surly with each passing week. Sorry, the Denny Duquette clinic.

Way back in Season 3, Izzie Stevens was still a resident, and Denny Duquette was still a patient at what was then Seattle Grace. Denny proposed to Izzie, continued dying, and Izzie famously cut the LVAD wire in hopes of saving her fiancé, but instead she killed him. Denny was pretty loaded and left all his money to Izzie, who started the clinic in his name. It was one of the most brutal deaths in TV history and we can’t believe Denny is now the bad guy on The Walking Dead. He loved Izzie!

As if Karev’s year couldn’t get any worse, he’s now working in the clinic his ex-wife named after her ex-fiance. Still with us? What was different about this week’s episode in comparison to previous episodes is that Karev eventually stopped complaining about his work and was almost pleasant. We guess some things do change.

Owen and Amelia’s quest to bring their relationship closer also included stories from their past, with Owen recounting the time his PTSD caused him to strangle Cristina in Season 5. Amelia shared that her ex-boyfriend overdosed next to her, something we actually didn’t realize was a secret. Their sharing circle resulted in both of them agreeing it was time to have children, something Owen and Cristina never agreed on. Callback!

Lastly, there was Meredith’s advice to her patient who didn’t want to face his wife after a flying accident severed her spine. Meredith softly reminded the man that his wife was still alive and still breathing, something her husband stopped doing in Season 11.

With all the past relationship ghosts of Seattle Grace and Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital roaming the halls this week, we did get the promise of a few new relationships. DeLuca and Jo have found comfort in commiserating over the case, Meredith has finally admitted to Riggs that she thinks about him (it’s a step), and Kepner and Avery have thankfully agreed to keep living together. Okay, so that last relationship isn’t really new, we just want these two back together. For the sake of little Harriet.
