Mekhi Alante Lucky is certainly proving that he deserves that name. You might assume that getting arrested for speeding in a stolen car would be a low point for a person, but for Lucky, it was an opportunity that lead him to a modeling career. His mugshot, shared by the Wake County police in North Carolina, went viral because of people’s fascination with Lucky’s rare, different coloured eyes.

Lucky has heterochromia, a genetic feature that resulted in him being born with eyes of different colours. The internet soon dubbed him ‘Prison Bae’ and, of course, his picture circulated widely. In its travels, it caught the attention of St. Clair Modeling’s Damiani O’Bryant in Atlanta. O’Bryant knew as soon as he saw Lucky’s mugshot on Instagram that the convict would make a perfect model.

And can you blame him? This is clearly what Lucky was born to do. Plus, he never actually went to federal prison. He just spent some time in the Wake County jail. We don’t think Twitter really cares either way though.

There’s another Prison Bae who is now a model. Mugshots are better resumes than mine will ever be

This isn’t the first time this has happened, either. You might remember in 2014 when Jeremy Meeks’ mugshot went viral and everyone called him ‘The Hot Felon.’ Well, he actually did end up in prison for two years, but he was also met with a modeling contract upon release.
So is the mugshot the new head shot? A year ago Mekhi Alante Lucky was evading police and now he’s gearing up for New York Fashion Week. Modeling’s a pretty competitive occupation, but it looks like whatever lighting county jails in the States are using is the secret to looking runway ready. We wonder if they’ll let us stage some selfies.
