Celeb tattoos — especially from our favourite A-listers — are always pretty big news. Huge celebrity back tattoos (hi, Ben Affleck) can cause the internet to go into a frenzy. That’s exactly what happened when Halle Berry posted this lil’ number onto Instagram: a photo of her from the back, sans top, about to crack an egg into a pan. While that image alone would’ve garnered more than a few likes and comments, throw in a huge piece of body art spanning her entire spine and get ready for her 4.7 million Insta-followers to let loose with their opinions.

Who says I’m not a mermaid 🧜‍♀️

A post shared by Halle Berry (@halleberry) on

“Who says I’m not a mermaid?” Berry captioned the image, complete with mermaid emoji. As one Twitter user noted, we’re not really sure what a giant spine tattoo has to do with being a mermaid, but carry on, Halle, carry on. (Maybe she’s talking about the fact that she’s topless and that her sequined glitter bottoms could kinda resemble fish scales?)

“I love it, shes gorgeous, and so is her tat,” said one Instagrammer. Many of the comments were along the same lines, accompanied by flame emojis, naturally. There were some detractors, though. “I hate it. HB, you have clear beautiful skin why ruin it with the body art or self expression or whatever this is. You really don’t need this stuff,” said Earthbound1991.

This isn’t Halle’s first tattoo (that is, if it’s real). The actress once had then-husband David Justice‘s name tattooed on her butt, which she now has gotten covered up by a sunflower. A smart move, if you ask us. “I chose a sunflower because when darkness descends they close up to regenerate. But I really wish I’d never had the tattoo in the first place. Clean, clear skin is always better,” she has said in the past.

Sooo, does this mean her leafy tattoo is fake? Stay tuned, we guess.
