The 2019 MTV EMAs took place on Sunday in Seville, Spain and honoured some of the biggest names in music in Europe and beyond. K-pop group BTS took home three awards, with Taylor Swift also scoring some serious hardware that included Best Video for “Me!” featuring Brandon Urie and Best U.S. Act.Teen singer Billie Eilish won Best New and Best Song for “Bad Guy,” but like Swift was a no-show at the awards. Also not in attendance was Shawn Mendes, who won one of his five nominated categories and took home the EMA for Best Artist.American singer Halsey had a lot to celebrate on Sunday, scoring EMAs for Best Look and Best Pop and performing her single “Graveyard.” The new song is part of Halsey’s upcoming third studio album Maniac, which is set to be released in January.
Former Best New Act winner Dua Lipa returned to the MTV EMAs on Sunday, where she performed her new breakup track “Don’t Start Now.” Backed by an army of dancers, Lipa expertly maneuvered a staircase during her heavily choreographed performance of “Don’t Start Now,” the lead single off Lipa’s upcoming second studio album.
K-pop also had a huge night at the MTV EMAs. Not only did BTS take home the awards for Biggest Fans, Best Group and Best Live, but a performance of “Highway to Heaven” from NCT 127 put the eight-piece group into award show history by earning the title as the first K-pop group to ever perform at the MTV EMAs.
Also making their MTV EMA debut was Niall Horan, who previously took home four EMAs with his band One Direction. Appearing on stage for the first time as a solo act, Horan gave a high energy performance of his new track “Nice To Meet Ya,” which doubles as the lead single from his upcoming second studio album.
For the older crowd, the MTV EMAs also included a performance from Liam Gallagher, who mashed up his new single “Once” with Oasis’ breakout hit “Wonderwall.” The singer switched up the lyrics to the iconic track, singing “There are many things I’d like to say to you, but I don’t speak Spanish.” Gallagher was also on hand to accept the first Rock Icon Award presented by the MTV EMAs, getting cheeky in his acceptance speech. “I won’t keep you too long, but I want to congratulate Seville for having a lovely city,” said Gallagher, adding “I want to congratulate MTV for recognizing my brilliance. Thanks for the award. I wear it well.”
