For Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s May wedding, the royal couple were faced with issues that many couples can relate to (ugh families), but on a very big, very public scale. In a new article appearing in The Telegraph, the ‘Markle Debacle,’ a fun name for the dumpster fire that was Thomas Markle’s continued interviews with the press and eventual ditching of the wedding, reportedly left the bride and groom in tears. Yeah, no kidding.

The build-up to Harry and Meghan’s wedding was, in a word, brutal. It was a car crash on the left-hand side of the road that we could not look away from. As if joining the Royal Family as a divorced, biracial woman wasn’t already a landmine for the American (gasp!) actor (no!) to navigate, Markle also had to deal with the embarrassment of her family speaking negatively about her and the royals to the press. There’s the nice kind of embarrassment by your parents at your wedding, when they recall funny childhood stories, and then there’s your dad selling you out to the papz. We’ll take the memory of us pooping in the tub any day.

Rumours surrounding the wedding included issues between Harry and the staff, with the groom ‘demanding’ that Meghan’s needs were to always be met. According to The Telegraph, “The catty gossip reportedly hit fever-pitch during the so-called “Markle Debacle” when Meghan’s father Thomas pulled out of the wedding at the last minute. The drama reduced both Meghan and Harry to tears, which perhaps explains why the prince went to such great lengths to ensure his bride-to-be could have everything she wanted on her big day.”

Harry and Meghan had a wedding that was more celebrated by strangers than Meghan’s family, which is both lovely and awful at the same time.

To recap, there was Thomas Markle’s nine-hour interview with The Daily Mail, his appearance on Good Morning Britain, his staged paparazzi photo shoot, and his decision to first hang up on Harry and Meghan and then to bail on the wedding at the last minute. And that’s just the stuff that we know about. Honestly, we’d be more concerned if Harry and Meghan weren’t in tears after this.

Let’s just be thankful for these two.
