With all the speculation surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s impending engagement, this bit of news fits right in. Because before they announce it officially (complete with photoshoot, press conference and sit-down interview), one thing absolutely needs to be done: they need to get the seal of approval from Harry’s grandmum, who happens to be Queen Elizabeth II. And it appears that may have happened.
While Meghan is a regular at Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace is a different story. But that appears to be changing. According to the Daily Mail, Harry brought Meghan to meet the Queen for tea; NBD. No, really, the paper reports that the late afternoon meeting — which took place last Thursday in Her Majesty’s private sitting room — was “informal” and lasted nearly an hour.
Five o’clock is usually when Her Majesty unwinds with a cup of tea (FYI, a blend of Darjeeling and Assam teas, known as Queen Mary’s blend), and noshes from a selection of sandwiches, fruit, scones and cake. It’s worth noting that it also happens to be the Queen’s favourite part of the day, so the timing couldn’t have been more perfect — and, likely planned that way, since she’s more relaxed, maybe even more receptive to the introduction. Ha! Wonder if Meghan Markle ever imagined this would be her life, having tea and scones in Buckingham Palace with British royalty.
Sixty minutes with the Queen? That’s a LOT. Has Kate ever spent that much time with her? Maybe now, but certainly not pre-marriage. And not on a one-on-one basis. Right? Harry probably prepared Megs and gave her the inside scoop on his grandmother, other than the tidbits she could’ve–and we would’ve–Googled. If she kept the conversation on dogs and horses and not her acting career, Meghan is IN. Now we just have to wait.
