For a while there, when Prince Harry was a swinging royal bachelor, we always thought, deep in the back of our minds, he’d one day end up with Chelsy Davy. Sure, they dated on and off for seven years, breaking up for good in 2011, but because they remained friendly and shared the same circle of pals (including Harry’s last ex, Cressida Bonas), if they somehow found their way back to one another, it wouldn’t have been that surprising.
Then Harry met Meghan, and she is most definitely Harry’s One. All you had to do was see photos of the two together interacting at royal appearances. But it was actually during their wedding when it seemed to finally hit Chelsy that she and Harry were done. Both Davy and Bonas were in attendance but the cameras panned over to Chelsy often, and she looked quite … resigned.
According to Vanity Fair, that pensive look may have had something to do with the fact that she didn’t receive an invite to either of the receptions. But it also might’ve been the realization that she and Harry were really over. Though perhaps that should’ve sunk in a week before, when she and Harry had a “tearful” conversation.
“It was their final call, a parting call in which they both acknowledged Harry was moving on,” reports Vanity Fair‘s Katie Nicholl. “Chelsy was quite emotional about it all, she was in tears and almost didn’t go to the wedding. In the end, she went and promised Harry she wouldn’t try and gatecrash the party.”
While Chelsy definitely wasn’t at the more exclusive nighttime reception at Frogmore House, some reports are saying she may have been at the daytime celebration hosted by The Queen. The Express claims Meghan even “broke royal protocol” and gave Chelsy a hug, even though proper etiquette would’ve been for Davy to curtsy. Whether Chelsy was even there, we might never know, but if she was this is exactly the kind of thing we’d expect from our Meg.
We’ll always have a soft spot for Chelsy. If wedding cameras caught her lost in thought for a good 20 seconds or so, so what, it’s totally understandable. Harry was her first great love, and vice versa. And even though they’ve been over and done with for years, memories of their time together had to run through her mind. But that was probably all it was.
Well, it was certainly a great way to get closure, wasn’t it?
