It’s been just over a week since we first heard Prince Harry is dating Toronto-based actress Meghan Markle. Aside from “whaaaaaaa?!?!” our immediate reaction was “OMG, Harry has a girlfriend, she’s not a Chelsy clone, and she lives in Toronto, which means more royal visits for us. Squeeeeeeeeeeee!” Or something like that. However, that’s not exactly the reaction that’s been happening everywhere.
From day one, the British media has been negative, looking down their noses, wondering how and why Harry would actually date an American actress. What’s worse, though, is the way they, and other outlets, have gone on about her race (her dad is Caucasian, her mom is African-American). Markle has always been a proud, strong, confident, mixed-race woman but the nasty stuff that’s been said about her in the past nine days has got to be taking a toll.
In fact, we’re guessing Markle must be devastated, so devastated that Harry can’t bear to see his girlfriend deal with this inexcusable conduct any longer. How did we come to this conclusion? While the Palace almost never releases statements to the media about anything personal, Harry has broken ground and released an extraordinary statement regarding the treatment Meghan and her family have been subjected to. And it’s even more epic than we could’ve hoped for.

We could read this all day long. Because, yes. A line has been crossed. Yes, the racial undertones, outright sexism and racism has been outrageous. And, yes, it’s completely understandable that Harry is concerned about Meghan’s safety and saddened that he feels that he’s been unable to protect her from it all. As for courses of action, this seemed like the most royal, yet most Harry way to go.
His argument that this should not be considered “the price she has to pay” is also telling. It’s probably one of the reasons (if not the main one) Chelsy Davy and Cressida Bonas didn’t (couldn’t?) stick around. But even though it’s only been a short time, for Harry to go this extreme (in the most awesome way, of course) means he doesn’t want Meghan running for the hills. This path she is now on with Harry is going to be filled with haters who’ll want to see their relationship fail. But Markle has proven through the years just how strong she is and if anyone’s going to stick around, it’s Meghan. The British press may have just met their match with her.
And on the plus side, we don’t have to speculate anymore! Meghan really is Harry’s girlfriend. Welcome to the Royal Family, Meghan! We hope you stick around for the long haul. And if Harry wants to visit Toronto more often, we’re OK with that too.
