Prince Harry and Meghan Markle went to great lengths to keep their relationship as secret as possible, for obvious reasons. But they also made an effort to not be apart for more than two weeks, which is a serious commitment, especially when you don’t want to leave clues or show any sort of pattern to the public. But since the paparazzi are good at sniffing out stories, particularly mind-blowing ones that involve a royal and an actress, it didn’t take long for their cover to be blown.

In the new book Harry: Life, Loss and Love, royal author Katie Nicholl lets us know exactly what the couple went through after those first few months of privacy.

“When the story broke, Harry happened to be with Meghan at her flat in Toronto,” reads the excerpt. “He was apparently taken by surprise when his aides called to tell him the story was going to be front-page news and knew that very soon he and Meghan would be under siege. A story was leaked that Harry had cancelled a flight to Toronto to try and make it look like he was in the U.K., but photographers and reporters descended on Meghan’s home regardless.”

So Meghan suggested they hide out at her friends’ home. And not just any friends: Ben and Jessica Mulroney. For one, the couple already knew about the clandestine romance,  so Meghan and Harry trusted them implicitly. And two, the press would be none the wiser.

“When Harry came to visit the family he brought a bag filled with gifts. He won the kids over in an instant. He was brilliant with them and I think what swung it for Meghan was how good Harry was with them,” said a source. “I actually think that might have been the moment Meghan really fell for Harry. He got to know the Mulroneys quite well, and they liked Harry from the beginning.”

Ben, son of former prime minister Brian Mulroney, also spoke of Princess Diana and how she once stayed with his family during an official visit to Canada back in the day, which “fascinated” Harry. But once talk turned to politics, Harry got bored and would slip away to hang out with Ben and Jessica’s kids. Oh, Harry.

Sneaking off on vacations, hiding out at friends’ houses, keeping everything a secret when you want to shout it from the rooftops is probably annoying but, at the same time, that’s kind of hot. Even if they were hiding out with a family of five. Whatever it takes, right?

Nicholl points out that they are an “unlikely pairing” and that Meghan is “more controversial” than Harry’s exes because she’s a biracial American actress and a divorcée to boot. Clutch those pearls. But all one needs to do is look at their photos or re-watch their interview (for the hundredth time) and you just know they’re meant to be. Less than two months to go before their big day. Who would’ve thought all that sneaking around would lead to this? Did they? Yeah, they totally did.
