Whenever one enters into a relationship or marriage, some things get lost in the shuffle. Friendships, in particular. His circle becomes your circle, or vice versa, and a lot of your old life gets left behind. But it all goes downhill is when your new circle doesn’t embrace “the interloper,” the one taking up all of their mate’s time. And when that kind of resentment exists, it’s all too easy to pick the new partner apart — even if they seem pretty damn perfect.

The Daily Beast is reporting on how lonely Duchess Meghan‘s life supposedly is; while royalty brings about certain privileges, it can also be quite isolating. It doesn’t help that some of Harry’s friends reportedly aren’t as taken with her as the rest of us — not because of who she is but for what she stands for.

“Her politics are an issue,” Lady Colin Campbell, writer and former confidante of Princess Diana, told the site. “She is ultra-liberal and that trendy-lefty stuff does not go down well with some of Harry’s friends. He has introduced her to them all at parties and weddings and private dinners, but she is very anti- a lot of the things that their world functions upon, such as shooting.”

Campbell continued: “Everybody discovers after marrying into the royal family how solitary and arduous an existence it can be. Meghan has already begun to discover this. However, because of her track record as a successful actress who has made her own way in the world, she may have the tools to cope with the solitary nature of her existence in a way that few others could have.”

With that oblique reference, Campbell turned the talk to Harry’s late mother:

“Diana really struggled with the solitary nature of being a royal, although she often ended up being alone because of her own miscalculations; she blew hot and cold and people got fed up,” she added. “Diana’s life was more isolated than it would otherwise have been. It is apparent that beneath her charm Meghan can be rather tough, her challenge is to maintain the new relationships she builds.”

The British upper crust can be quite mean and gossipy so the problem Megs is facing is knowing who she can trust. People mag recently reported just how tough it’s been for her, to find people on her new side of the pond, all while keeping in touch with her trusty pals from her former life.

The Daily Beast implies that that may be why Meghan is taking on all kinds of royal duties and charity work, to keep herself busy, but hey, it could also just be because of the kind of human she is: a thoughtful, passionate advocate for gender equality, not to mention a big-time animal lover. The idea of shooting one probably crushes her soul a little bit. And more power to her. If anything, it’s Harry’s friends — the ones living in their own elite, conservative bubble — who are probably going to be left out in the cold, because he’s going choose her every single time.
