The episode picked up right where season 12 left off, with Owen and Amelia dancing at a wedding full of people we’ve never seen before and Karev arriving at the hospital with a very, very badly beaten DeLuca, whose first name is apparently Andrew, a much easier name to have in 2016 than Harriet.

The good thing about Thursday’s premiere was that this was the second time a doctor at Grey Sloan Memorial beat a fellow employee, but this time there were actually consequences. In Season 9, Jo’s retaliation against her abusive boyfriend Jason put him in the hospital, with the entire event seemingly forgotten about by the writers. This time around it’s Alex throwing the punches and there will be blood. And consequences.

As per usual, the dark and twisty downer twins Meredith and Alex spend the entire episode being dark and twisty, debating over whether to tell anyone that Alex’s glaringly obvious bloody knuckles were the same knuckles thrown at DeLuca, but it was a moot point. DeLuca is going to be just fine and has no problem remembering the events that transpired, which landed him in the hospital.

Meredith stayed busy furrowing her brow and lying to Maggie about her knowledge of the attack in order to protect Alex, but really, why should she protect Alex? Furthermore, why should we care what happens to him?

Sure, the doc from the wrong side of the tracks and his not-so-endearing need to constantly tell everyone around him to ‘shut up’ has made great strides over the course of the show, but at the root of it, he’s kinda the worst.

Alex is the guy who bullied George, then bullied Kepner. He turned in Meredith, his supposed best friend, when she switched files on Derek’s trial in order to give the Alzheimer’s medication to Weber’s wife Adele. He’s consistently pushed his girlfriend Jo aside for Meredith. He’s verbally berated just about every character that’s appeared on the long-running show. But every so often Alex gets left by a wife or watches his absentee father die just to make sure we still root for him.

And sure, Alex attacked DeLuca thinking that the young resident was attacking Jo, but no one watching is surprised by his character going from zero to violent. If Alex really thought DeLuca was attacking Jo then he would have gone straight to the police as soon as he arrived at the hospital and explained it was defence. His attendance in the admitting room to ensure DeLuca survived, and fear over being found out doesn’t represent the actions of someone who thinks they were protecting a loved one. They’re the actions of someone who wanted to hit a guy.

Alex has saved a lot of tiny babies over his career at Grey Sloan Memorial, but maybe it’s time we stop hoping he’ll be saved. Next week’s episode will centre around Karev’s trial and maybe beating up DeLuca isn’t something Alex should go to jail for, but he’s definitely committed enough moral crimes in the past that viewers should finally throw the book at him.
