Every outfit is only as powerful as the person wearing it. Look no further than any “who wore it better” comparison for proof. And so, it’s not that we think there’s somebody who could wear this floor-length red gown with sequin embellished bell sleeves better than renowned actress Helen Mirren–there isn’t. She’s doing as good a job as any could expect to, and it comes darn close to a home run but goes foul right around the sleeves.
Bell sleeves? If you must. Sequins? Sparingly. The two in combination? Just don’t.

Helen Mirren is two sleeves short of a style ace
Tessa ThompsonThis dress had everything in perfect moderation… that is before adding the detached sleeves. With the extra sleeves, this outfit looks more like a toddler’s doodle of a wedding dress than a bona fide couture look. (S)leave it alone, Tessa! Okay, that was bad. Sorry.Getty Images
ZendayaOnly Zendaya could make a tracksuit work with a trench vest and white pumps. Although she is (inexplicably) rocking this look, it has to be acknowledged that it is a bizarre combination that should probably be contained to this one instance. Don’t try this at home, kids.Getty Images
Professor GreenWhile 50 per cent of the reason Professor Green looks like an over-eager teenager going to his first job interview can be chalked up to this pose, the other 50 per cent comes from this suit. It looks like the kind of outdated thing a father would pick out for his son who’s never owned a suit before. Getty Images
Olivia CulpoAt first glance, you might think this was a stock photo of a bride about to have a shotgun wedding in Vegas. Somehow the truth—that it’s actually a dress Olivia wore to this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue launch—is actually even more sad.Getty Images
Natalie PortmanThis Valentino dress looks like a Black Swan tutu that’s still in development, right before the stage where the designer trims back the tulle. It’s just way too heavy on the bottom, and the shoulders would be way more uplifting with less fabric.Getty Images
Leona LewisThis dress and cape make a powerful impression, but unfortunately the gold leaf apparatus on the skirt makes Leona look a bit like a fancy wall sconce. If it were embroidery instead of hardware, or just removed altogether, she would look like a sexy modern-day Superwoman.Getty Images
Jennifer Jason LeighThere are some good ideas in Jennifer’s dress, but instead of mixing them with any kind of appreciation for visual rhythm, the designer just threw them all together haphazardly. A big improvement would be to have the top be the same subtle lace as the skirt instead of whatever the heck is going on there now. Getty Images
Janelle MonaeWhen your sense of style is as carefully curated as Janelle’s, it must be hard to keep finding unique pieces when limited to black and white graphic prints. Usually Janelle knocks it out of the park, but it looks like she assembled this outfit by closing her eyes and grabbing random things out of her closet. Not the best way to dress yourself. HaimBetween the three of them, the odds were in their favour that at least one of the musically gifted sisters would get it right, but apparently they’ve decided to defy the odds. So many influences from different decades clashing in just one photo!Getty Images
Issa RaeThis is a rare misfire from Issa. It’s a little old fashioned, and not in a revamped, polished kind of way, but more an ‘aunt stuck in the ’70s’ kind of way. The pants might be salvageable if they were paired with a top that wasn’t as dull as dishwater.Getty Images
Helen MirrenAfter all those neutrals, it’s nice to finally see a colorful look, but this one isn’t much of a relief. The way the sleeves bellow out just slightly at the sequined bits makes it look like they’ve stretched out in the wash. If they were tight and went all the way to her wrists, this would be a winning dress.Getty Images
Glenn CloseBoth Glenn and Helen made mistakes in red this week, but where Helen’s look was trying a little too hard to be flashy, Glenn’s just isn’t trying at all. A super simple fix to fancy this look up a little would be to add one of those bejewelled Peter Pan collar necklaces.Getty Images
Emily BluntEmily looks really sweet in this outfit. Like, tooth-achingly sweet. That’s all fine and dandy, but we fear her sweetness may also make this look forgettable. The most interesting element was a coat that she took off for some reason. Go put it back on and then we’ll review it…Getty Images
Emily Blunt (part 2)See? Doesn’t the coat totally transform the entire outfit, bringing some boldness to the look, and making the patterns stand out much more? It’s too bad she took it off, but you can’t fault her for not wanting to overheat just for fashion’s sake.Getty Images
Danai GuriraThe tight pleating radiating out of Danai’s dress is amazing, which is why it would be nice to see a little more skin (and not in lecherous way). Cutting off the sleeves would simplify the look, keeping the pleating at centre stage and better showcasing how much this colour complements her skin tone.Getty Images
AnnaLynne McCordRemember Tom Felton’s street magician outfit from a while back? Well, meet his lovely assistant. Individually these pants and jacket are fabulous, but together they are competing for attention and somehow making each other look worse, like two idiots in a bar fight. Getty Images
Christina RicciIt’s always a treat to see the bright mod/nouveau-preppy patterns and silhouettes at Marc Jacobs’ shows, but this one on Christina Ricci isn’t very thrilling. The pattern isn’t super appealing to begin with, and ends up making her look a bit like a painting that you’d find on the wall in a budget hotel room. Getty Images
