Americans got just a taste of Canadian winter over the weekend.

Winter Storm Jonas buried the East Coast of the country under 42 inches of snow in some areas, leading to eleven different governments declaring a state of emergency. For three straight hours, winds gusted at an eye-watering 60km/h, with visibility reduced to half a kilometre in some areas as a result of blowing snow. Roads were deserted, schools were shuttered and residents of Washington, D.C. were subject to a 36-hour hibernation.

Tragically, in all the chaos, 20 people were reported dead (and that number is subject to change in the coming days). The day wasn’t all doom and gloom though. Washington locals organized a giant snowball fight at Meridian Park, advising anyone who wanted to join to “bring your battle gear”. Others used the opportunity to break out their skis and snowboards and hit the snow-covered streets. Here are all the wildest images we could find:
