There are few Canadians who don’t yearn for escape from the frigid winter season.

We call those people crazy brave. For the rest of us, though, we’ve got your top escapes for the year ready to go. Whether you’re looking for a cheap sunny getaway or a steamy romantic one, we’ve got tabs on the best deals around. Just keep in mind the weak Canadian dollar paired with El Niño is making this a bit of a strange year for winter travel. So here’s where you should be looking to visit, based on the kind of experience you’re looking for.

On the cheap

Looking to save cash? You can find some great all-inclusive packages in the Dominican Republic, which offers some of the best variety when it comes to price points. Specifically, you should check out Casa de Campo Resort and Villas, a 7,000 acre mega-resort that features three golf courses, spas, polo facilities and, of course, beautiful beaches.

To spice things up

St. Lucia is home to some fantastic couples-only resorts and stunning, romantic scenery that’s sure to raise the heat. You could check out Ladera Resort, billed as a “romantic paradise”, or Rendezvous Resort, which features candlelit dining on the beach. Even the views from this island nation should help kick your libido into high gear.

Keen on culture?

Want to break out of the resort bubble? No problem. The key here is to try places that you wouldn’t typically think of. The less “known” a destination is, the less “touristy” it will likely be. Panama is a good starting point though. Because it’s an up-and-coming tourist destination, much of what it still offers is genuine, authentic culture. You can venture into the rainforest and meet indigenous tribes who still live within its heavily wooded areas, or check out Old Panama city, which is currently being restored.
