If you’re on the hunt for another high-fashion-approved beauty look that will never ever make sense to wear IRL, terrarium eyes are it.

Terrariums are oh-so trendy in the design space right now. Who doesn’t love a tiny glass orb full of wee little succulents? They perfectly punctuate any space, adding a touch of desert vibe in a glass or jar or snake tank. But taking these micro gardens and adding the elements directly to your face might not be the most practical way to incorporate this decor trend into your beauty regime. It sounds… prickly.

But it sure looks pretty.

The idea behind terrarium eyes comes courtesy of a UK-based makeup artists, Ellie Costello. The 19-year-old works at Mac Cosmetics, so you know she’s got skills, and she also runs the Instagram account @makeupisart_x where she’s been uploading photos of her whimsical creations.

First she uses what look like small silk flowers, applying them directly to her brow and cheekbones, then she free-hand draws vines and leaves and accents with other colourful elements.

Ultimately, the look is fantastical and playful, albeit 100 per cent not suitable for real life. Can you imagine showing up to your friend’s birthday party next weekend wearing this? You’d be praised for your creativity, not to mention, mad skills with a makeup brush, but it doesn’t really scream “I woke up like this.”

Impracticalities aside, Costello’s work is impressive. It’s like she carefully considers every flower she applies and every leaf she paints, proving makeup really can be the perfect outlet to satiate creativity.

Here are some more of the awesome designs we’ve spotted on Instagram:
