Hair has that transformative quality that can make women feel beautiful, and every woman deserves that feeling. That’s why Pantene Beautiful Lengths wants to help you to donate your hair to the Canadian Cancer Society’s wig banks. Whether you want to donate 8 inches or $8, your contribution can bring hope to those affected by hair loss from cancer. Want to know how to do it? Read on.
Hair requirements – Quality
In order to donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, your hair must be free from dye or bleach and no more than 5 per cent grey. Why can’t hair be dyed? It takes at least 8 to 15 ponytails to create one wig and each ponytail must absorb dye at the same rate to make the wig look natural. Unfortunately, hair that is grey or that has been bleached or chemically processed is much harder to dye when it comes to creating realistic, high quality colour.
Donated hair must be a minimum of 8 inches.
Making the cut – At home
- Clean and shampoo/condition the hair. Don’t use any other styling products.
- Tie hair into a low ponytail, making sure that the elastic is just below where you want to cut your hair. The hair from the elastic band to tip should be 8 inches or more.
- Place a second hair tie somewhere in the middle or near the end of the ponytail to keep all the strands together.
- Cut the hair just above the first hair tie.
- Place the ponytail in a zip lock bag. Make sure the ponytail is dry.
- Mail it to:

At the salon
Got 8 inches of hair to spare? On Saturday Pantene Beautiful Lengths will celebrate their 10th year with National Donate Your Hair Day — a day to encourage Canadians to cut and donate their hair to create real-hair wigs for women battling cancer. If you live in and around Toronto, Pantene and the Canadian Cancer Society will be hosting an event at Bang Salon on Danforth. If you can’t make it in person, consider donating to donate2create.ca (it takes 8-15 ponytail donations to make one wig!) ✂️ Pictured above is six-year-old Julia (a SavvyMom staffer’s daughter) who grew her hair for two years to donate. 💇🏼 #Donate2Create #BeautifulLengths @natalielmilne @pantene @cancersociety
If you are in the Toronto area, on November 18th between 9-4pm, Bang Salon is offering a free cut and style to anyone wanting to donate. Can’t make it there? Have your regular stylist cut a ponytail off for you before your regular cut.
Donate cash instead
If you’ve got bleached locks, a short crop, or just aren’t quite ready to part with your hair, you can opt to donate money instead. Whether it’s $5 or $500, every little bit helps towards distributing wigs to women in Canada and the United States who need it most.
