When it comes to the beloved burger brand A&W, no item on the menu is more recognizable than its famous root beer.
In a new announcement made this month, A&W revealed that not only have they improved their famous drink, but they will also be giving it away for free next week.
Starting July 10, customers who order a root beer at one of their Canadian stores will be treated to a new, all-natural brew. Their root beer will now be made with all-natural ingredients — including cane sugar, sarsaparilla root, licorice, birch bark and anise — in place of artificial sweeteners and flavouring agents.
The famous drink will still be served in its traditional, frosty mug, but now, there’ll be a few less chemicals to worry about consuming. The new root beer will also be made available for customers to purchase in the craft soda aisles of grocery stores in four-pack glass bottles.
To celebrate the move to a more natural root beer, A&W will be giving away the drink for free on Saturday, July 22 at all Canadian locations.
“Our customers told us that they want food and drink made with natural ingredients and we’re taking big steps to make it happen,” said A&W Canada’s senior director of marketing and brand communications, Tom Newitt, in a press release. “We’re proud to introduce A&W Root Beer crafted with natural cane sugar and all-natural flavours, which is another first for fast food in Canada.”
Since 2013, the company has continuously led the way for Canadian fast food joints, using beef raised without hormones and introducing fair trade coffee into its many locations. And A&W’s revamped root beer is the company’s latest move towards integrating more natural ingredients into its menu.
