Weekends are about to get a whole lot steamier. That’s because the third season of The Affair — that sexy show starring Joshua Jackson, Dominic West, Maura Tierney and Ruth Wilson — is back for a third season, and from what we’ve seen it’s going to be insane.
If you’ll recall, we left off with Noah confessing to the hit-and-run murder of Alison’s former brother-in-law. But in reality, it wasn’t his fault; it was actually his ex-wife Helen who was driving the car — at Noah’s drunken request. Oh, and Alison was there too: she actually pushed Scotty onto the road when he tried to assault her.
But yes, things are about to get even crazier, people. Here’s what we know so far.
1. Time Jumps
The premiere picks up three years in the future, when Noah is finally out of jail. But just because the guy is out doesn’t mean he’s been fully forgiven by the people in his life. Or that he’s recovered from the experience.
“Why Noah took the fall for a crime he didn’t commit is really one of the central questions of the third season,” says creator and executive producer Sarah Treem. “So the question of what is Noah Solloway’s damage is going to get explored in depth this season.”
2. A Solo Perspective
After two seasons of telling the same story with several different perspectives, we’ve gotten used to questioning everything we see. At this point it’s hard to determine who’s a reliable narrator and who isn’t. In the premiere that all changes again though, when it’s only Noah’s perspective that we see for the full hour. And trust us when we say it’s a bleak outlook.
3. A New Perspective
As Noah attempts to rebuild his life, he’ll also have another new lady to help him along the way.
“There is going to be a new perspective, a character named Juliette Le Gall who is being played by Irène Jacob, she is a French actress,” Treem adds. “We’re really excited about it. She is amazing.”
We get to meet Le Gall in the third season premiere, when she and Noah unexpectedly hit it off at his new job.
4. Unexpected Connections
For those looking forward to an Alison or a Cole update, you’ll have to hold your horses — at least for now. Neither character is actually present in the premiere, but we’re sure it won’t take long for them to pop back up in some way.
“It gets worse before it gets better… all of the characters are having to take stock of who they actually are. And they are all very much at odds with themselves this season,” Treem reveals. “I mean they are interacting with each other very much, and it could be a surprise in what happens, but they are also really kind of at war with themselves, all of them.”
5. Conflicting Vantage Points
Speaking of perspectives and connections, it sounds like the writers are trying really, really hard to be fair to everyone and to create a third season in which all vantage points make sense even when they’re conflicting. Does that make sense? Perhaps Treem can explain it better…
“The idea behind this show is that there is no such thing as objectivity, because we all approach a situation through the prism of our own perspective. But then as a writer what you’re trying to do is actually prove otherwise, in order to put yourself in the mind of one character and then put yourself in the mind of the other character and make sure you’re being fair to both sides,” she says. “We struggle to achieve that. We have got a writer’s team that’s split half men half women so that’s very deliberate.”
6. Maternal Feelings
We all know how Noah feels about his father at this point, and maybe why he has some of the anger issues that he does. That will all come full circle in the premiere, we promise. But in the meantime, how does Noah feel about his mother? Could she be the key to his complicated issues with women in the present day? We’re not sure, but according to Treem we’re about to find out.
“This season is a lot about Noah’s relationship with his mom,” she teases. “So it takes two parents to create a child and Noah’s relationship with his father and his anger toward his father is kind of more obvious than his relationship with his mom. But Noah’s relationship with his mom and what happened and the circumstances surrounding her death are very much a part of why he became the person he is. So we will find out.”
7. Another Murder
We don’t want to give anything away, but we’re hearing grumblings that there could be another murder or attempted murder to dig into this season, and it may be even more shocking than when Scotty died. For now all we’ll say is to watch closely, and because this is The Affair take everything you see with a grain of salt. We know we are.
