When a celebrity is arrested and charged with an offence, it’s easy to be a little jaded come sentencing time. Despite the seriousness of the charge, it always seems to be a slap on the wrist, probation or some other nonsense where the punishment does not fit the crime. So when it came time for the once-beloved Bill Cosby to be sentenced, many just figured it would be something minimal like house arrest. Nope, he got an honest-to-goodness sentence: three to 10 years in state prison.

Not only that, Cosby’s request for bail was denied, pending his appeal, and he was remanded immediately. According to Variety, he removed his suit jacket, watch and tie in the courtroom, and was handcuffed by two deputy sheriffs and taken to county jail.

It was Cosby’s first-ever criminal trial, as the statue of limitations had already expired for most of the women who came forward to tell their stories, and it was the first real legal consequence of the #MeToo, #TimesUp era with actual repercussions.

Celebs were quick to chime in upon hearing the news and their reactions ran the gamut: some honest and political, some trying to make light of it, others annoyed and angry — but all right on the money.

While many on Twitter are arguing that a man his age shouldn’t be in jail, let’s be serious. He’s led a rich, full life for his first 80 years. Some crappy ones tacked onto the end is nothing compared to what he’s done to these women. Cosby’s sentencing might not be ideal for everyone but if anything it’s taught us this: no matter how long ago it happened, tell your stories and believe in justice. For some, the outcome could be a surprising one.
