Well, it looks as though at least one person is still in Hulk Hogan’s corner. Or at the very least, is willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who made a satellite appearance at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour on Thursday, gave his take on his former co-worker’s racist comments, which resulted in the WWE severing his contract. Naturally, he wasn’t impressed.
“Yeah. I saw that. I was pretty disappointed with what I heard, like all of us, by the way,” Johnson said. “Really disappointed in it. I’ve known Terry for a lot of years, and my dad helped train him in Florida in the ’70s when he was breaking in the business.”
That said, The Rock wasn’t cooking up any judgement. He pointed to his long history with the ’80s superstar, and their time together coming up through the ranks.
“My uncles helped train him, too, as well, in Florida. So I have not known the man to be racist,” he continued. “It’s funny. It’s one of those things where — and not justifying what he said — we’ve all talked trash. Especially in private. But he said what he said, and he’s paying the price.”
Meanwhile, it doesn’t look as though Hogan and Johnson will be reunited on screen together anytime soon/ Johnson is busy starring and producing in his latest HBO series Ballers, which was recently picked up for a second season.
Catch Johnson in Ballers Sundays at 10 p.m. ET.
