You might want to think twice before buying that bottle of rum the next time you’re on vacation. Or about packing that over-sized souvenir vase for mum in your baggage.

While we all get nervous about checking our luggage before boarding a flight — and expect some level of damage to the outside of our suitcases by the time we get them back — we don’t expect them to be completely manhandled. Sadly, that’s exactly what a hidden camera has uncovered: the blatant disregard for everyone else’s personal property at an airport.

In the video (above), workers can be seen taking out their aggression on a number of suitcases, as they’re hurled from trolley to conveyor. Bag after bag is just thrown — not even lightly tossed — onto the belt, in many cases slamming against the back wall first.

Since the video was released, five workers have been let go from their positions. Still, damaged luggage is a common problem thanks to the similar way it’s handled on many flights around the world. Where there aren’t hidden cameras to capture the behind-the-scenes action. There’s a reason, as the reporter in the video above jokes, that there’s only two types of luggage at all: carry-on and lost.

Reminding us all that the best way to bring valuable items home is always to bring them back on your person, and not in your bag.

Watch the clip above to watch the horror for yourself.
