More than a few of the worst dressed stars this week put an avant-garde spin on their red carpet looks. While we love it when celebs push the fashion envelope, these cases pushed the envelope so far if fell right off the table and into the recycle bin.
Anne Hathaway, for example, sacrificed her ability to turn her head in order to partially pull off this black sleeveless gown. Why, Anne? That does not look comfortable, like, at all. What if you have to look left or, heaven forbid, turn in that direction? Classic Zoolander situation.
Also putting forward flops this week were Tyra Banks, Tatiana Maslany and Alexa Chung. Click through and learn from their mistakes, or just chuckle a bit. You’re still a good person, we promise.
Hey Anne Hathaway, your dress is really confusing
Bai LingUnfortunately, Bai Ling looks more like a mediocre Instagram model than a real star. It would probably help if her topknot wasn’t a big as her head.Getty Images
Gemma ArtertonThis pattern should be fine, but on this dress it’s too much. The floaty pieces of fabric coming down from the shoulder tie blend in so much we bet some onlookers didn’t even notice them until we mentioned it. The itty bitty cut-out also disappears in the pattern, and doesn’t add anything.Getty Images
Hannah GottesmanBefore she started acting, Hannah was one of the models on Project Runway, so we’re sure she’s seen her share of bad designs. The dress she’s wearing underneath isn’t necessarily that bad, but the sheer overskirt makes it look like something out of Jovani’s Prom catalogue.Getty Images
Helene YorkeWe love the colour and we love the idea of matching pleather separates, but this outfit is not living up to the ideal. The dichotomy of a baby doll top complete with frills in a burgundy faux leather is jarring. The stretch waist of the pants as well, though undoubtedly comfortable, just doesn’t look great in this fabric.Getty Images
Alexa ChungSomewhere there’s a prairie girl standing outside of her little home saying, “Hey, that looks EXACTLY like that dress I made out of the table cloth.” Cute, sure, but this strapless gown looks too matronly and too mid 19th century on a style maven like Alexa Chung. Getty Images
Jason SudeikisIs Lorne Michaels doing a parody of Newsies, or is Jason wearing this newsboy cap of his own free will? If Jason wants to dress in a more classic style, we fully support that, but in that case he should be wearing shoes that don’t look like they’re from a music video, when the rest of the look says period-piece musical.Getty Images
Anne HathawayThis dress would be certifiably fabulous if only it didn’t jut up so far into her face. Anne did a great job of not making it look too awkward, but come on, she is incapable of looking to the left! There might be times when we value fashion over function, but we have to draw the line somewhere.Getty Images
Krysta RodriguezWhen we found out Krysta’s new show Trial & Error is a true crime mockumentary, and not a make over show involving fashion crimes, we were a little disappointed. Alas, the show turned out to be hilarious, but Krysta ended up the fashion victim in this sorbet coloured layered mess.Getty Images
Leslie JonesIf we saw Leslie dressed like this in the street, we would say she looked great, but for a red carpet event this is too dressed down. Even just a little change like replacing the ripped jeans with a cigarette pant would elevate this outfit.Getty Images
Macarena GomezSome of the most spirited outfits came from Spanish actresses this week, and spirited can be a good thing. We just wish that Macarena had toned it down just a smidge by tossing the bird cape thing. The dress underneath actually looks like it might be nice, but we’re too distracted by the copious amount of feathers.Getty Images
Maria LeonIt’s super cool that Maria is wearing something creative and unlike anything else on the carpet this year, but we can’t get past the image of a car driving over a pile of tissue paper. We are so happy that she’s taking a risk, but this outfit is a little too risky for us.Getty Images
Naomi CampbellWe’d like this look a lot better without the coat. The texture doesn’t go well with the dress underneath, and the white looks so good with her skin that we wish we could see a little more of it. This lacks the wow factor that Naomi’s red carpet outfits have all had in the past.Getty Images
Sarah Jane AdamsSarah Jane Adams is known for her unconventional pattern pairings that are always fierce. Unfortunately, this print just looks like what we’d see if we put mould under a microscope. That’s a no from us.Getty Images
Stella EgittoThis is the face you make when you order a dress online and when it comes, it's way too big but you don't have time for alterations so here we are. This frilly disaster looks like a cast off from Nicole Kidman’s closet. The little black bow also doesn’t go with the rest of the dress at all.Getty Images
Tatiana MaslanyThere’s something about this look that is too cutesy, and we’re not sure if it’s the bronze sneakers, the ruffles, or both. The arrangement of the stripes on the dress is excellent, but there’s something in the styling that makes it look a little childish.Getty Images
Tyra BanksWe’re not even sure. Is this pants? Is this really tight lace? Is it painted on? Regardless of what’s going on here, we truly wish it wasn’t. Tyra likes to make her own way, stylistically speaking, but she’s gone too far here. Love that lip shade, though. Getty Images
