Who knew that all it would take is a pandemic and a bra? After nearly two decades, the cast of Disney’s Lizzie McGuire got together for a virtual table read of the 2001 episode "Between a Rock and a Bra Place," and the results were just as hilarious as fans would expect—especially given the original installment is about 19 years old and meant to star teenagers. Do new bra jokes still hit when you're in your 30s?Apparently so. OG Lizzie portrayer, Hilary Duff, took to Instagram on May 11 to share the 44-minute video featuring herself, Adam Lamberg (Gordo), Lalaine (Miranda), Jake Thomas (Matt McGuire), Robert Carradine (Sam McGuire), Hallie Todd (Jo McGuire), Ashlie Brillault (Kate) and Davida Williams (Claire). Kyle Downes was also there to play episodic guest star David Carradine, who passed away in 2009. "LIZZIE MCGUIRE retro table read!" Duff wrote. "We could not stop laughing reading lines from tween us...this is the first time we were all 'together-ish' in almost 18 years! Do excuse our delayed singing...we will be taking singing lessons as a group to work on our craft!!"
As fans may recall, "Between a Rock and a Bra Place" was all about Lizzie and Miranda getting their first bras because they thought it would help them become more popular. It’s an episode for the vault to be sure, so it made sense that writers Nina and Jeremy Bargiel also Zoomed into the reunion to set up the history behind the making of the episode.“I truly believe that this show was magical, and everyone that was a part of it created that... and made this show mean so much to so many people," Duff says in the video following the reading. "I think we're all very grateful to have experienced that."Lizzie McGuire only ran for two seasons in the early 2000s, but over the course of 65 episodes it definitely amassed a large following. It also catapulted Duff, now 32 years-old, into stardom and set her up for a career in TV and film, most recently starring as Kelsey Peters on Younger. When Disney announced it was reviving Lizzie McGuire for a modern-day audience last year, fans were very much in their feelings over the return of the iconic character.[video_embed id='1955343']RELATED: The ‘Community’ cast reuniting for virtual table read[/video_embed]Unfortunately, this table read may be the closest we’ll get to actually seeing Duff reprise her most iconic role. While two episodes of the new series (which revolves around 30-year-old Lizzie living in NYC) have filmed, there are already a bunch of problems behind the scenes. Series creator Terry Minsky bowed out as showrunner earlier this year over creative differences—she and Duff reportedly wanted to make a more adult version of Lizzie that would speak to original now-adult fans, but Disney wanted that same kid-friendly version that hit with a younger set all those years ago.Disney has said it’s committed to resuming production once studios open up again following the coronavirus pandemic, but it's possible Duff herself may be out. She addressed the controversy on IG in February, writing, “Was incredibly excited to launch ‘Lizzie’ on D+ and my passion remains! However, I feel a huge responsibility to honor the fans’ relationship with LIZZIE who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her. I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30 year old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating.”“It’s important to me that just as her experiences as a preteen/teenager navigating life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable,” she added. “It would be a dream if Disney would let us move the show to Hulu, if they were interested, and I could bring this beloved character to life again.”[video_embed id='1956777']BEFORE YOU GO: Kelly Clarkson tells us about her secret talent[/video_embed]
