On August 11, history was made in the United States when presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden announced Kamala Harris as his pick for running mate and Vice President. Harris’ nomination makes her only the third woman nominated for vice president by a major political party and the first Black and first Asian American woman to ever be nominated.“I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked Kamala Harris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate,” tweeted Biden. “Kamala Harris is the daughter of proud immigrants—a mother from India and a father from Jamaica—who raised her to take action. That’s exactly what this moment calls for: action,” added Biden.[video_embed id='2012331']RELATED: Biden selects Harris as VP[/video_embed]Harris responded to her nomination on Twitter, writing “Joe Biden can unify the American people because he's spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he'll build an America that lives up to our ideals. I'm honored to join him as our party's nominee for Vice President and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.”Social media was flooded with celebratory messages following the historic appointment from Hollywood and closer to Harris' home. Her sister, Maya Harris, is one of the many people who shared a video of the Democratic nominee for Vice President speaking about the pair’s late mother, Shyamala Gopalan. Although Gopalan is not alive to see her daughter become the first Black and first Asian American candidate to be nominated for vice president by a major political party, millions of other BIPOC will see Harris make history. The significance of Harris' nomination was touched on by many celebrities, including Mindy Kaling, Kerry Washington, Debra Messing, Lance Bass and Jessica Biel. John Legend said he is looking forward to Biden and Harris embarking on “the difficult work of recovering from this nightmare presidency and building an even better future.” Viola Davis, Whoopi Goldberg, Roxane Gay, Chadwick Boseman, Chrissy Teigen, LeBron James, America Ferrera, George Takei, Wanda Sykes, Pink, Mandy Moore, Karamo Brown, Rita Moreno, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jordan Peele, Sophia Bush, Jane Lynch, Joe Jonas, Stephen Colbert, Charlize Theron, Jason Alexander, and Taylor Swift all shared their excitement over Harris’ nomination.
Harris’ nomination also means that comedy fans are about to see a lot more of Maya Rudolph. The SNL alum was recently nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her appearance on Saturday Night Live as Harris. Rudolph was participating in a virtual roundtable with her fellow Emmy nominees when news of Harris’ nomination broke, prompting the comedian to respond, “Oh s***.” Rudolph is about to be very busy and we are very excited.Speaking to IndieWire later in the day, Rudolph shared her admiration for Harris.“It feels hopeful, as a human living in the United States. It’s terribly exciting to feel like someone so incredibly worthy of the nomination has it, and someone who I admire and respect,” she said. “It makes me feel energized to follow the campaign. As a person who for so many years played different people, it’s such a joy to get to be part of the race.” Harris’ fellow Democratic party members, including former President Obama, former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren all shared their congratulatory messages following the news. Unfortunately, less than 24 hours after Harris' nomination, the racist and sexist attacks against the politician have already begun. Former Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett has teamed up with Planned Parenthood, Emily’s List, Times Up and the National Women’s Law Center ahead of Biden’s announcement to create the #WeHaveHerBack campaign, which includes sending letters to major media outlets urging them to publish fair and just coverage of Harris and other female politicians.
