If there’s one thing we love more than a beautiful wedding, it’s a beautiful wedding cake. But when one baker was asked to make a very non-traditional wedding cake and cupcakes, she went above and beyond.
Reddit user Skizorbit and owner of Darling Delights posted galaxy-themed cakes (for all the space lovers out there) to Reddit. And while we can’t stop gawking at them, we’re more interested in what she revealed to other Reddit users.
She explained exactly how she made the cakes:
“I covered the cake with white fondant and the cupcakes with white icing, then airbrushed the gradient and [colours] on the cupcakes. The galaxy, trees… and stars are all painted on using paint brushes, sponges… and food [colouring].”
In other words, if you ever want to try your hand at replicating her incredible cakes, you need to cover your dessert in a smooth, white icing before adding any colour. Then you can unleash your artistic side with an airbrush to get that incredible metallic gradient. She even revealed that she made the stars by splattering the cake with coloured icing from a toothbrush. (A clean toothbrush… we hope.)
“The great thing about airbrushing is that it is such a thin layer of [colour] with just [uncoloured] icing beneath it,” said the master cake decorator. “It doesn’t have the awful taste of heavily dyed icing.” Which means not only does the cake look incredible, it’s bound to taste better too.
Let’s take a moment to zoom in on that galaxy.
Stunning, yes, but just how much does a cake all decked out in space actually cost?
“These were for very close friends of mine so I only asked for the price of the 160 cupcakes — $200. A cake like this normally is about $160 or so on its own,” she said.
That may be a bit out of your price range, but now that you know how simple it really is to make a galaxy-themed treat, you can try it for yourself. Or, you can order some of the incredible creations from Darling Delights, if you’re willing to splurge a bit.
