Following in the contentious vein of the white and gold (or black and blue?) dress, and the ‘Laurel’ and ‘Yanny’ debate, another divisive question is hitting the Twittersphere – how do you drawn an X? Turns out there are no less than eight ways to scribble the letter, and Twitter users are in complete disagreement as to the ‘right’ way (hint: it’s 7 or 8… but that’s just our opinion).

When twitter user Sixers Smasey (@SMASEY) tweeted the question, she probably didn’t anticipate the hoopla, with the tweet so far garnering almost 50,000 likes, over 20,000 comments, and over 10,000 retweets (and counting):

There was quite the variety of responses, from definitively sure, to downright confounded by the options:

Then there were those who forgot their ‘x’s entirely:

And those who disagreed when it came to handedness and the natural direction of the Western alphabet:

And to confuse things even further, another user threw an algebraic x into the mix:

Another pointed out that as per the cursive way, option 7 seemed to win the day:

And it seems like cultural forces were at least partly responsible for at least some of the differences, with Smasey noting a general trend – Americans favoured 7 or 8, with Brits apparently leaning towards 5 or 6:

So perhaps it’s taught. Or perhaps it’s just one of those maddeningly inexplicable things. Which one is it for you? If it’s anything other than 7 or 8 – we’re not sure we want to know.
