Brooke McAlary is an advocate for the best things in life: naps, travel, and getting lost in a good book, for example. She’s also the author of SLOW, a self-help guide to simple living in a frantic world. Since 2011 she’s been on a one-woman mission to cut the excess out of her life, reconnect to what’s really important and immerse herself in the slow living philosophy.

According to Brooke, doing less is not for underachievers or weak people, but rather it’s for those who want to declutter their lives by injecting more value and meaning into their everyday routines.

Here are some tips for how to get started:

  • Start by asking yourself questions like; “What is my why?” and “What are my personal priorities in life?”
  • Do less. You’re not weak for taking a step back and assessing what is really important in your life. Let go of worries and forget about that voice in the back of your head.
  • Focus on the small things; a ray of sunshine, an ant on a hill, a good book, and travelling.
  • Seek out intentional spaces. Spaces that replenish your energy; a park or green space to visit once a week.
  • Say no. Don’t be afraid to say no to fewer obligations, and pressures to help reduce your stress.
  • “Mind-less” living: Live a value-based life, be present in the moment, and cut out aspects of your life that do not improve your overall happiness or productivity.
