Season 3 of How To Get Away With Murder is building up to a gruesome fire at Annalise’s house, that we know claims the life of at least one character (this week we found out there was a second victim, but so far they still have a pulse). While arson and a death (or murder?) may be the end game, our journey towards the finish line includes finding out a lot more about the show’s characters.

This episode was not a good one for dads, with Bonnie having to revisit her unthinkable traumatic childhood thanks to their disgusting client with a penchant for killing women. At least Annalise delivered a well-deserved slap heard round the world.

Last week, we got some insight into Frank, including learning that he came into Annalise’s life by being a patient of her late husband Sam while Frank was incarcerated. This week, we traveled to Miami to find out more about Laurel’s shady papi. Ay dios mio.

In an effort to find Frank for Annalise, Laurel enlisted the help of her estranged father Jorge Castillo. He’s a hugely successful business owner that we’re pretty sure makes drones and spyware to help the government. Or something like that. Whatever he does includes a $5,000 suit and a bodyguard.

In Season 1, we saw Laurel go home and display some bad blood with her father, but the motivation behind her actions was unclear. Now we know why. Actually, there are a lot of whys. First, there was her father leaving her mother and remarrying one month later. This happened at a time when Laurel’s mother, who suffers from an undisclosed mental disorder, was having a breakdown.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, when Laurel was 16 and living with her family in Mexico, she was kidnapped. It’s a scary and sad reality for wealthy families in the country and when Laurel’s father refused to pay the kidnappers, a distinct line was drawn in the sand between Laurel and Jorge. We’re still not sure how or why Laurel was returned to her family, but the rift between her and her father definitely makes more sense. Laurel’s attraction to Frank, a man not that unlike her father, is also becoming clearer. Yes, Jorge is a narcissist, but he’s right about Laurel’s daddy issues.

Laurel’s request to her father to help her find Frank includes signing a contract or ‘selling her soul’, a move that doesn’t scream love and affection. If there was any chance that Laurel was going to hand over her father’s research on Frank to Annalise, that vanished when Frank called and revealed that Annalise had hired a hitman.

We don’t know what Laurel’s next move is or how she can trust anyone when two of the biggest influences in her life are her father and Annalise, but bringing these two characters into the same storyline did highlight something we hadn’t noticed before.

Wes was chosen for the Keating 5 because Annalise knew his mother and felt responsible for her death, but is it possible the rest of the group were also chosen for specific reasons? Asher’s father was a judge, a fact Annalise exploited, and now we know that Laurel’s father has connections to advanced monitoring systems. Is there also a reason Michaela and Connor were selected?
