Bored of basic black eyeliner, no matter how dramatic the shape? Just as we trade in our little black dresses for white frocks during warmer months, it’s time to swap out black liner for bold, white liner. And there are three ways to wear this trend, so things won’t get boring in the beauty department. One look requires a little bravery, but two subtler ways to wear it brighten and widen eyes. Here’s the scoop on how to:

Get a Cat Eye

If you’re already a practiced cat-eye creator, this look should be simple. Just use the white liner of your choice—liquid or pencil—in place of your usual black.

If that cat eye flick doesn’t come so naturally, start by lining your top lids as close to your lash line as possible, then add a flick that starts near the outer edge of your top eyelid and continues at an angle towards the end of your eyebrow (but don’t draw the line the whole way unless you’re going very bold).

Another way to get a great-looking cat eye is to mark out your line with scotch tape. Press the tape against your finger first so it’s not too sticky, then place it below where you want the line to go. Then draw your liner along its edge for a perfect line.

If you want to go super high fashion, try a white Cleopatra look by lining top and bottom lashes, finishing with an extended cat eye.

Get Wide Eyes

This look incorporates white liner in an almost invisible way, and it makes your eyes look bigger and more awake. Take a long-wearing, white pencil and line your water line. (That’s the inner rim of your eye.) It’s a bit tricky to line the first time, so start slow. You don’t want to poke your eye out! Now, gently pull your lower lid down so the water line is exposed and softly add colour. You may want to continue to pull your lid down to give the liner a moment to dry. Adding white to your water line creates an optical illusion of wider eyes and can look dramatic when you add lots of mascara to your lower lashes.

Get Eyes that Pop

Another quick and easy way to instantly brighten your eyes and look more awake is to use white eyeliner in the inner corner of your eyes. Use a soft white pencil—The Body Shop’s new kohl-style eyeliners are great—to trace the inner corners of both eyes, and then smudge with your finger or a small sponge brush. You can also add a bit of a lift to eyes by drawing a line that extends from the end of your lower lashes up (as if drawing a cat eye) and then blending it into skin.
