Idris Elba is a pretty cool guy—so cool, it's almost too much—but we still want to hear every last detail about all the outrageously impressive stuff he’s done.
On a recent visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Elba dished about one of his most exciting accomplishments: DJing the Royal Wedding (has a cooler sentence ever been uttered?).
“So Harry and I, we’ve hung out a couple of times through his dad’s charity...the Prince’s Trust helped me out as a young actor. And so I do a lot of work with them, Harry and William,” Idris told Ellen. “Harry came to a couple of parties that I DJed and he was like, ‘Hey man, what are you doing--’ on the [wedding] date?
“And I was like, ‘Nothing,’ he goes, ‘Hmm, would you DJ at my wedding?’” Elba continued. “I was like, ‘Is this a joke? Are you joking?’ and he’s serious. It was great.”
It’s been well documented that Idris was a DJ before he was an actor, but he’s pivoted back to his musical hobby more recently. The 46-year-old not only performed at Harry and Meghan’s wedding, he’s set to play Coachella this year and is starring in a new Netflix series, Turn Up Charlie, centered around “a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor [who] is given a final chance at success.”
Elba might be *slightly* older than your average DJ, but the reigning Sexiest Man Alive isn’t letting that hinder his job performance; he’ll be partying it up like everyone else at Coachella this year—in a flower crown and matching thong no less (courtesy of Ellen, of course).
He's also set to drop a music video for his musical collab with Wiley, Sean Paul and Stefflon Don, called “Boasty” and teased the upcoming video on his Instagram Tuesday.
Will Elba’s next wedding DJ gig be his own? We can’t imagine he wouldn’t take a spin at his upcoming nuptials with fiancée Sabrina Dhowre. Idris is really the embodiment of “Go big or go home, ”proposing to the Canadian beauty last year at a screening for Yardie, a movie he directed. He shared with Ellen just how “nerve-wracking” that was.
“It was two days before Valentine’s and this ring in my pocket was burning a hole,” he said. “And then Valentine’s came and she had to fly somewhere so it was likely I wasn’t going to see her on Valentine’s Day so I was like, ‘When do I do it? When do I do it?’”
Elba explained that Dhowre was on set every day when he was filming Yardie and knew the whole crew so the private screening was the perfect place to pop the question.
“I just dropped to one knee,” he said. “It was very nerve-wracking.”
