Grammar-lovers of Canada, we have some bad news for you. It’s time to drop the beloved period from your texts. Everyone thinks you’re being insincere.

It’s long been suspected, but now there’s proof. A recent study done by researchers at Binghamton University has confirmed that putting a full stop after every sentence in your text messages rubs people the wrong way. Here’s an example:

Sam: Hey do you still want me to come over?

Mat: Sure. See you at 5.

Sam: Cool

Be honest, doesn’t Mat sound like a jerk who doesn’t really want to see Sam at 5?

According to the study’s findings, its participants would also agree that he comes off as a totally jerk and would seem more sincere if he left out the periods. Granted, only 126 undergraduates were shown a series of exchanges framed as either text messages or handwritten notes, according to the Washington Post, but we’re sure millions of texters around the world would say the same thing. Luckily, periods everywhere else are still A-OK. So keep on adding full stops to your Facebook messages and tweets…Just keep ’em out of your texts, OK?
